Shirley H. Jayne, a dedicated educator and cherished member of the LaGrange community, formerly of Westchester, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026. Born Shirley Hoff on March 10, 1931, Shirley's life was marked by a profound commitment to education, family, and an enduring love of the outdoors.
Shirley’s academic journey was distinguished by her earning a Master's degree, a testament to her dedication and passion for learning. Her professional life was devoted to shaping young minds as a teacher at Proviso West High School, where she served for many years. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she inspired countless students with her knowledge, kindness, and unwavering support.
Outside her career, Shirley found solace and joy in the natural world. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, embracing the beauty and tranquility of nature, which reflected her gentle spirit and appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Shirley’s family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her beloved husband, Syle A. Jayne, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and partnership. Together, they raised a family that continues to honor her legacy: her son Bruce Jayne and his wife Carole; her grandchildren Laura Jayne, Sam Jayne, Jenny Epstein, and John Rodenburg; and her great-granddaughter Emma Epstein. Shirley’s loving brother, Richard Hoff, also survives her, providing a close familial bond.
Her family mourns the loss of Linda Rodenburg, her daughter, who preceded her in death. The memory of Linda remains a cherished part of Shirley’s life story and is held close by those who loved her.
Shirley H. Jayne’s life was a testament to the power of education, the strength of family bonds, and the beauty of the natural world. Her legacy endures in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her, and her memory will be a guiding light for future generations.
